Game #108 - Wings of Honor: BoRB

Posted on March 24, 2007 at 11:20 am.

I just completed Wings of Honor ~ Battles of Red Baron and added it to the list of games that I beat under the number 108.

This is one of those download and pay type of deals, so I didn't get a a box or a CD for my collection. That in itself is fine, but the fact that it took me a hour to beat both Allied and German campaigns is ridiculous.

Yea, the game is $20, but even that is too expensive for no box and mere 11 tiny missions for each side. I am disappointed.

LotRO.

As of late I'm growing somewhat curious of Lord of the Rings Online ~ Shadows of Angmar. It seems to be an interesting game that plans to challenge World of Warctaft's supreme reign over the MMO market.

I have not had a chance to play it yet, but I did apply for beta. Meanwhile I was reading up on it and it seems that they are following the WoW formula pretty closely. There are some differences, but overall it didn't make an impression of being something very original.

Since I'm a fan of Tolkien, I am very interested in seeing how his literary works were interpreted in order to make a computer game. I am also interested in checking out the locations and meeting the characters. From the gaming point of view I'd like to see the graphics and the gameplay mechanics.

One thing I dread, however, is the inevitability of "kill 10,000,000 pigs" type of quests - my most hated artificial play-time extender. They are boring, stupid, useless, insulting and serve no other purpose than to give players busy-work, which translates into more playing time, which in turn translates into more monthly fees. However, all MMOs do that right now, so I guess there isn't much choice.

Movie - Monsieur Verdoux.

Posted on March 22, 2007 at 12:24 am.

Just saw Charlie Chaplin's Monsieur Verdoux.

Very nice.

I found it to be 20 minutes longer than it should have been and I am not sure I liked the ending, but I certainly can appreciate the art.

It is sad that movies like this one are no longer made. Instead we get fed crap like 300. And the hoi polloi loves it.

Dear posters and contributors,

I enjoy having you here and I enjoy our conversations. This is the reason why I created the comments feature in the first place. However, please do understand that posting your comments on my site is a privilege not a right.

I am interested in people's opinions so please feel free to share your ideas. I believe that the point of an argument is to establish the truth. Sometimes that is impossible and then the best way is to agree to disagree and end the conversation before it becomes a flame war.

Agreeing with me or liking me is not required. Same goes for other posters that you may encounter here. What is required, however, is that you act like a civilized person. Barbarians are not welcome and will be simply removed along with their posts.

With that being said, I am looking forward to many productive and enlightening conversations with all of you!

Thanks!

Animal rights group wants to kill.

Posted on March 20, 2007 at 5:31 pm.

A baby polar bear was abandoned by his mother and raised by humans at a Berlin Zoo.

The spokesman for an "animal rights" group is someone named Frank Albrecht. He had the following to say:

"The zoo must kill the bear. Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws."

Overall the group believes that lethal injection must be given to the cub to relieve him from suffering the humiliation of being treated as a domestic pet.

Sources are here and here.

Alliance Abroad Group.

Posted on March 20, 2007 at 5:19 pm.

A group of 26 or so students in Moldova wanted to come to the US for summer jobs. They signed contracts with a company called Public Supermarkets with help from Alliance Abroad Group (AAG).

They paid a lot of money to AAG for this, but as they all got visas and were ready to go, AAG told them that Public withdrew from the contract and that they would have to sign another contract or lose money.

The students were in panic and they signed whatever AAG told them to. Namely a contract with a place where they would have to work night shifts for much less money and live in a place with no beds or showers.

Then one of these students contacted me.

I called up a company who was supposed to be these students on behalf of Public. They said that the students' contracts are still valid. They also said that this is a retaliatory action on behalf of AAG. Apparently AAG has been engaged in shady business practices for a while now. They cheat both the students and employers on what seems like regular basis.

The hiring company is considering suing AAG, and the students should probably complain about them to the US Department of State. The sad thing is, the students don't even know such a department exists.

Tomorrow morning they will go to the AAG representatives in Moldova and try to get their money back. They will most likely fail.

I wonder, why is an American company allowed to practice such blatant deceit? Apparently our image as Americans isn't tarnished enough. Well... at least the AAG can take care of it for us.

Monster.

Read this article... link.

I really wish someone offed that bitch. Hopefully in a painful and degrading way.

To clarify: I am NOT soliciting murder. I will NOT pay anyone to commit a violent crime. I do NOT condone such crime. Should I learn that such crime may take place, I WILL report it to the authorities at once and without delay.

However, should I discover that Mila Petrov was in fact murdered, I would feel compelled (on moral grounds) to offer a donation, in order to pay a part of attorney's fees, to a person who did it.

Good-bye World of Warcraft!

Posted on March 20, 2007 at 10:19 am.

Last night I have closed my World of Warcraft account.

The reasons for this are many.

This game has been with me for two and a half years, and I have been following it since it was first announced by Blizzard years ago. I spent countless hours playing it and had a lot of fun in doing so. When Burning Crusade was released I got it on the first day, and later was the first person in my guild to reach level 70. I guess I just got burned out.

Another reason is that between my new wife, my new job and my new cat I just don't have enough time to dedicate to it. There is so much to do, so much fun to have and so few hours in a day. I found myself not having played WoW in over a month because I preferred to have fun in RL or play other games.

Yet another reason is that there are so many games out there that I want to play, and WoW does hog a lot of the time I could otherwise spend on those. Since now I have less time for games, I must choose between playing many different games and playing WoW exclusively. Even before my gaming time got cut, I noticed that I am playing less and less other games because I am playing WoW all the time.

This is not a final farewell. WoW is a spectacular game and I may as well come back one day. Even though my account is canceled, none of my characters are gone and all I have to do is reactivate it on the day I decide to come back. Maybe it will be when the next expansion comes out.

For now, however, I'd like to thank Blizzard for their masterpiece and to thank other players for the great times we had together. Hopefully this is not the last we see of each other.

Good bye!

Jack Thompson speaks.

Posted on March 19, 2007 at 5:41 pm.

Last week a crazy kook that is Jack Thompson got (finally) hit by a lawsuit from Take-Two.

As did many others I held my breath for a spectacular reply.

I was not disappointed. Oh no! In fact I was blown away!

Read Jack Thompson's reaction to the lawsuit here. It is absolutely awesome!!! Old man Thompson has outdone himself this time. In fact I think he has outdone even Derek Smart himself.

To think of it, I would love to see one of them pitted against the other. It would be such an epic spectacle to behold... too bad it probably will not happen. Personally I can't imagine Smart making good and popular games that Thompson would notice. Also I don't expect Thompson to be practicing law much longer.

Ah, but one can dream.

The Silver Lining.

Posted on March 19, 2007 at 5:04 pm.

I've been trying to follow the development of The Silver Lining, a fan-made King's Quest sequel. I mentioned it previously in this entry in 2005 and this entry in 2006.

There haven't been any news in a while so today I went back and looked at their web site. It looks like there have not been any updates since the patch for the unfortunate demo.

Is this game ever gonna see the light of day? I hope so, but I am beginning to have serious doubts. Even after accounting for Vivendi's original interference, why is it delayed like this?

I understand that once a project is halted it takes a while to get back into gear. But look at the timeline. Vivendi spoke up in September 2005. Let's say they did so on September 1st. On November 29th, they changed their mind. That's 2 months. Let's say it took another 2 months to get back on track.

The game was promised in 2006. Where is it? If it is being finished as we speak, where are the updates? Why does their site look dead? How come not a single gaming publication is mentioning it?

What's happening over there?

1985: The DGSE sinks Greenpeace’s ship, the Rainbow Warrior, at the direct authorization of President Mitterrand. Of course, being French, they botched the job and it backfired horribly. Since then, the French government has done nothing worthwhile.
