Today's pictures.

Posted on April 29, 2007 at 4:11 pm.

The weather was good today so I went out and took some pictures. There were quite a few, but I have a couple I want to mention.

First of all I took five pictures of a flowered field and later merged them into one. This is my first time merging photographs like that, and here is the result:

Then, I found a bunch of humongous frogs! They would all jump into the pond as I approached, so I couldn't take a good picture. Still I managed to shoot one of them! It may not look too big on this photo, but it is probably bigger than both my fists combined. Here it is:

Then I found a small snapping turtle in a parking lot of some office building. It was pretty far from water and was struggling in the mid-day heat. I picked it up and took it to the pond with the frogs. I hope they get along fine.

Riots in Estonia. Major WTF.

Posted on April 27, 2007 at 4:23 pm.

Estonian government has decided to move a Soviet war memorial from the center of Tallinn to a military cemetery. There were protests, peaceful at first, which then erupted into a full blown riot, which the police couldn't quell for many hours.

People were injured (some killed), shops looted, property destroyed.

The Russian government is preparing to sever diplomatic ties with Estonia over "removing the monument to liberators".

At this point I have to ask, "What the fuck?!"

What liberators are we talking about? In 1941, the USSR invaded Estonia. They proceeded to do their dirty socialist business, that being arrests, executions, robbery and so on. Later on, Germany took over Estonia to replace the USSR.

Later yet, USSR came back. They liberated Estonia from the Germans alright. I am sure Estonians were ecstatic for having Soviet International Socialists liberate them from German National Socialists. Yippity-fucking-do!

Can someone please write to me and give me an explanation of why on earth don't the Estonians have every right to move (not destroy or deface, but move) this monument out of the center of their capital?

Cover up or get banished.

Posted on April 27, 2007 at 4:16 pm.

The officials in Tehran are cracking down on insolent bitches women who, in preparation for summer, dare to dress in a manner that is not traditional enough.

Repeat offenders will be banished from Tehran for 5 years.

Why? Because, "those women who appear in public like decadent models endanger the security and dignity of young men". This sounds reasonable. I am a young man and I sure would not want my security or dignity endangered!

Allah akbar.

They didn't see it coming.

Philly just shut down all the psychics and a bunch of other leeching charlatans (not lawyers though). Apparently they had this law for 30 years, just forgot about it.

The way I see it, it's awesome. I have equal contempt for both the oppressive commie government and the assholes who claim supernatural powers to take advantage of stupid people. If the two fight, one is bound to lose. And whoever loses, I am happy.

New feature.

Posted on April 25, 2007 at 9:11 pm.

I just added a new feature that lets people leave their e-mail or web site when they leave a comment.

It is optional of course, but if you decide to do it, it will be accessible by clicking on your name in your comment.

I made it so that the page will automatically decide if the entry is a web site or an e-mail address and display it accordingly (either as a mailto: link or as a URL).

What should I play?

Posted on April 23, 2007 at 4:23 pm.

The next game I beat will be number 111 on my list. It's a pretty cool number and I want the game to be cool as well.

Some time ago I planned to throw a party after completing my 100th game. Unfortunately that never came to pass, since the game was Diablo 2. I thought that it sucked so I didn't feel like celebrating at all.

Last week I beat Nocturnal Illusion, which is a spectacular game. It would have made a good eleventy first game, but alas it will forever be 110th.

So what should I play?

I still have Planescape the Torment to finish, but I am not in love with it. It's a good game by all accounts, but... I want something better. It should probably be an oldie too. Back in the day they really knew how to make games. I am sure I missed a bunch of good ones, all I gotta do is find them!

This I don't get.

A professor at Emmanuel College got fired for leading a classroom discussion about the Virginia Tech shootings.

The funny thing is that the administration had asked the faculty to speak to students on the issue.

Nocturnal Illusion.

Posted on April 22, 2007 at 3:48 am.

I just finished playing Nocturnal Illusion.

...

Who knew that a hentai game, a game that I originally dismissed as being built around a few erotic drawings, could turn out to be so... powerful.

I am genuinely touched by it. Few games, books or movies have managed to do this before. I found myself feeling for the characters and sharing in their sorrows. Their stories may appear cartoonish on the surface, but every single one of them has a quality that makes them appear real. Any of those could have happened in real life, fantasy elements aside. I always found such simple and seemingly mundane things to be much more frightening than any fictitious monsters...

And another thing... For games that have multiple endings, I always consider the one I pick out first to be the "true" ending. Although I looked an every possible ending in Nocturnal Illusion, the very first one, the one I felt right about, turned out to be the saddest one.

Anyway, I am still very much under the game's spell. I need to reflect on it some more.

Somehow this doesn't seem important now, but I am going to write it for the sake of consistency: this is my game number 110 and I added it to my list of finished games.

[Edit:] I think it is possible that the makers of Dreamfall may be referencing Nocturnal Illusion. The story of the girl in the static appears to be similar to that of Arisa. Or maybe they are both referencing something I don't know.

50% happy news from Russia.

Posted on April 22, 2007 at 12:09 am.

The below two paragraphs are the beginning of an article about the new "press freedom" in Russia.

"MOSCOW, April 21 — At their first meeting with journalists since taking over Russia's largest independent radio news network, the managers had startling news of their own: from now on, they said, at least 50 percent of the reports about Russia must be "positive."

In addition, opposition leaders could not be mentioned on the air and the United States was to be portrayed as an enemy, journalists employed by the network, Russian News Service, say they were told by the new managers, who are allies of the Kremlin."
