Korea according to my sister - 2.
Posted on July 24, 2007 at 9:37 pm.
My sister sent me another letter. Here it is with minor corrections and omissions:
My most darling brother: Good morrow to you!
So I'm about to start teaching in an hour and a half. The training meeting yesterday was a non-meeting. They were stressed to see the 2 new teachers. One boss ran out never to return 10 minutes before the meeting was supposed to start and the president (this really pretty Korean lady) arrived 40 minutes late shook our hands and locked herself in her office. (Her office says "Florida" instead of the name tag. The other boss's office says "New York". I don't know why.)
So the Korean teachers were told to show us the textbooks. They didn't know which ones we would be using, though, so we just kind of leafed through several. There are 2 types of textbooks as I understand it.
1. "Cow says MOO" type books.
2. And "the elderly druid hath spoken, "Show thyself, oh monstrous heathen" type books.
So today they'll just stick me in a room with a random book and several kids. I met some kids and they are very cute. They saw me, started whispering and when their teacher showed up, they ran after him shouting, "Look, Teacher! New Teacher! New Teacher!"
Oooo! I discovered that my [?] can be heated if I am so inclined. feels nice. It's pretty here, overall. Everyone said that it'll be dull, gray and depressing, but it's not. I walked around all night because a bunch of people were out everywhere and it felt safe. BTW, you know those small Korean-owned 24 hour corner stores in black neighborhoods? Well they have them in Korea too! Everywhere.
[...]
Much love
Your little sister

Korea according to my sister.
Posted on July 24, 2007 at 10:02 am.
My sister went to Korea for a year to teach little Korean kids English. In this, a number of things are achieved. First of all my couch has been liberated. Second is that they will learn really bad English and will not be able to compete for our jobs. Third, I can now inaccurately judge Korea based on her letters.
I will publish parts of these letters here. Of course it will be just the general stuff that I find interesting - not the full letters. I will also fix the spelling and grammar as best I can.
I encourage you to post comments and questions, and maybe she will answer some of them. Anyway, here it is:
Koreans stole the Starbucks logo!!!!!!!!! There is a coffee shop called Tommy's coffee and it has a logo that looks almost identical up close and definitely identical from afar.
Here's how the shower works. You go into the bathroom and remove all towels and toilet paper, take it out of the room. The turn on the shower and wail from the cold. After a minute, realize that you cant take it anymore. Think and ponder. Realize that there is a special device to control the heating of water next to the heater and air conditioner and go heat up some water. Go into the bathroom again and have yourself a nice shower. wipe off the surface and bring back the toilet paper. There.
I found burger king and dunkin donats, but they are weired. There is a security guard in my building, but he's this really old and frail dude who watches 3 different soap operas on his 3 TVs. I am the only white woman in my school. I haven't arrived yet and they've already used my picture in their advertisements.

No interpreter, so child rapist released.
Posted on July 23, 2007 at 11:45 am.
So this guy named Mahamu Kanneh comes to the USA from Liberia. He then promptly proceeds to rape a 7-year-old girl. After that he gets arrested and the next day is released on a $10,000 bond.
Then really weird shit begins to happen.
Apparently this Mahamu asshole speaks some tribal dialect which is spoken by only 100,000 people in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Even though he went to school and college in the US and spoke English to the police, the court has decided that he needs an interpreter.
Soooo... they couldn't find one for 3 years.
And yesterday they just dismissed all the charges, because apparently their inability to find an interpreter violated his right to a speedy trial.
If judge Katherine D. Savage was herself raped at 7 years of age, perhaps she'd reconsider. Alas she wasn't.
Full article here.
P.S. - This is while another guy is serving a 10 year old prison sentence for getting a blowjob from a 15 year old girl, while he himself was 17. More on it here.

LGR ships.
Posted on July 20, 2007 at 5:55 pm.
They shipped it last night and it should arrive approximately on the 25th according to FedEx.
I am still to order the CPU, but I am waiting for the price drop. It may be worth noting, however, that some sites already carry the E6850, although it is not officially out yet. Odd.

You know what I hate?
I hate it when I am trying to find a Defias Messenger for a while, then find him and begin attacking. Suddenly a mage runs up and attacks him as well. I am thinking that she also needs the quest and invite her before the Messenger is dead. After we kill him, he drops an axe, which is a major upgrade for me.
The mage rolls NEED.
I say WTF?! She says that she doesn't need it and tries to give it to me.
The thing is - she can't. Because she's on a trial account. Oh and she didn't even need the Messenger to begin with...
Not a big deal, but daaaaamn it!!!

Dolls. I am weirded out.
Posted on July 18, 2007 at 2:32 pm.
I saw a Reuters article today about men in Japan who live with realistic sex dolls instead of real women.
Pathetic losers? Yes.
Then someone sent me this 45 minute-long documentary on the whole thing.
OMG! WTF! These people are fucking insane! All these men are normal looking (according to women I asked), but they give lonely nerds a bad name.
Well... at least they don't go out at night killing people... as far as I know...
