Cat + Shampoo.
Posted on June 15, 2008 at 1:29 pm.
Over night a window was open in the bathroom and the wind knocked down a nearly empty bottle of shampoo.
The shampoo fell into the bath tub near the drain and some of it leaked out. Most went straight down the pipe, but some was left around it.
I noticed it but decided against taking immediate action. After all there was no harm in it. I was planning on taking a shower in a few hours and expected it to just wash down.
Before taking a shower, I saw it fit to vacuum my apartment. As I was vacuuming the living room, Puma, my cat, hid in the bedroom under the bed. When I came in to vacuum the bedroom, she ran off and hid somewhere else.
After vacuuming I was making tea in the kitchen and suddenly a blue cat walked in. I must say that this is somewhat unusual, as Puma is normally more of a grayish color.
Upon closer inspection I discovered that she is covered with shampoo. Her maw was clean though, so I deduced that she did not eat any for it. "Well, isn't that fortunate," thought I.
I took Puma to the bathroom and began washing her. Apparently she found my actions disagreeable. After a lot of screaming oh her part and a lot of swearing on mine we were finished.
I set the cat down and turned to turn off the water. When I turned back, the cat was gone. Since my bathroom is about the size of a pantry, this seemed odd.
I thought for a moment and then said, "Oh no!" Right after that I said, "Oh no!" again and looked inside Puma's littler box.
Sure enough she was there, her wet fur covered with litter.
So we washed up again.
Finally we went to dry. Since I don't normally wash the cat, I don't have a dedicated towel for this purpose. So I used a kitchen towel and my very own t-shirt.
Then Puma fell on the floor and started licking herself dry. I helped with a brush in hand.
At the end of this adventure the following was achieved:
1) The cat probably hates me even more now.
2) The sink had much fur and litter sank down it, and is therefore malfunctioning.
3) A perfectly fine shirt and a towel are now covered in cat's fur.
Thank you for your attention.

Windmills of You Mind.
Posted on June 11, 2008 at 8:57 pm.
I love "Windmills of Your Mind" by Noel Harrison. It was the song that you may remember from the original 1968 "Thomas Crown Affair."
Anyway I bought an MP3 of it today from Amazon. Not the version that I would prefer, but it will make do for now.
Then I found this version on YouTube, which is much better.
And then I found this hilarious Muppet Show version.

How would I look?

If I was old? Or if I was born in China? Of maybe in India?

My Indian self looks like I can code in Java on the spot! I'm gonna include that picture with my resume from now on!
Here is the program I used. (I found a link to it on Vika's blog.)

Independence Day - Major WTF.
Posted on June 11, 2008 at 9:42 am.
It was recently brought to my attention that Russia is soon to celebrate its Independence Day.
Being a student of history, I felt a bit stunned to say the least.
As far as I knew, Russia was never under anyone's command. How do you gain independence without having been dependent on someone?
For example the United States gained independence from Great Britain. That is Britain was governing over its American colonies and they were dependent on her. Once they fought and rid themselves of Britain's control, they gained independence.
So who did Russia gain its independence from? To answer that question I did what I always do when Russia puzzles me - begin asking Russians on the Internet.
The response? Well it was a wee bit confusing as well. Nearly all of my correspondents told be that Russia is celebrating its independence "from other countries". Hmm... Ha-ha-ha.
At this point I turned to my father, who explained to me that on the 12th of June, Russia dissolved the Soviet Union, which it created and held together by force.
...
This is sweet. Russia let its colonies go and is now celebrating its independence from them.
Perhaps I don't understand something. Perhaps the 4th of July should be a British independence day... from the US.

Barbarians.

It is always important to remember that not all barbarians are 7 foot tall degenerates dressed in animal skins. They also have parents and grandparents, and wives, and children, who despite their appearances, are barbarians just as well.

Remember this old song by Bony-M? I liked it before, but now I like it much better as a metal composition:

The New York Times has a really interesting article on it's front page today. I searched a bit and found it online. Take a look, here it is.
Not only are the ruling party's opponents prevented from appearing on TV (that includes rock bands that took part in other parties activities), but those who do somehow manage appear are then photoshopped out. Sometimes their legs can still be seen.
The article draws parallels between current practices and the Soviet removal of executed "comrades" from the Party photographs.
Nice.

Study: conservatives more honest.
Posted on June 2, 2008 at 1:42 pm.
Read this: source.
Is it OK to cheat on your taxes? A total of 57 percent of those who described themselves as "very liberal" said yes in response to the World Values Survey, compared with only 20 percent of those who are "very conservative." When Pew Research asked whether it was "morally wrong" to cheat Uncle Sam, 86 percent of conservatives agreed, compared with only 68 percent of liberals.
Ponder this scenario, offered by the National Cultural Values Survey: "You lose your job. Your friend's company is looking for someone to do temporary work. They are willing to pay the person in cash to avoid taxes and allow the person to still collect unemployment. What would you do?"
Almost half, or 49 percent, of self-described progressives would go along with the scheme, but only 21 percent of conservatives said they would.
When the World Values Survey asked a similar question, the results were largely the same: Those who were very liberal were much more likely to say it was all right to get welfare benefits you didn't deserve.
The World Values Survey found that those on the left were also much more likely to say it is OK to buy goods that you know are stolen. Studies have also found that those on the left were more likely to say it was OK to drink a can of soda in a store without paying for it and to avoid the truth while negotiating the price of a car.
Another survey by Barna Research found that political liberals were two and a half times more likely to say that they illegally download or trade music for free on the Internet.
