A chicken to die for.
Posted on August 20, 2008 at 2:50 pm.
Yesterday, while I was at work, Yara was experimenting and ended up cooking some kind of roasted or baked chicken.
It was the best thing I have tasted in years!
Oooooooo!!! I LOVE IT!!!

Shenderovich on war.
Posted on August 18, 2008 at 8:11 pm.
This is for my Russian-speaking readers.
If you recall, in my very first post about Russo-Georgian war, I wondered what would Shenderovich have to say about it.
Well, here it is, his most recent article: link.

And the results are in.
Posted on August 18, 2008 at 2:33 pm.
Actions tend to have consequences. In particular the recent Russian antics in Georgia and threats to Poland have resulted int he following:
1) Ukraine offered its satellite facility to the US as part of the European missile defense system.
2) Russian naval lease of the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Sevastopol is to be scrapped if any vessels join the conflict in Georgia.
3) 58% of the people in Poland support the missile defense plan, compared with 30% in March 2007.

History - FAIL.

Russian President Medvedev (a.k.a. [Putin's] Puppet):
"We have always been a peace-loving state. Practically there is not a single occasion in the history of the Russian or Soviet state when we first started military actions. We have not attacked anyone, we only secured the rights and dignity of people as peacekeepers."

Anti-Circumsision people.
Posted on August 18, 2008 at 12:10 pm.
On Saturday I saw a bumper sticker saying "Say No to Circumsicion." I was quite baffled. It had a web site address, so today I remembered it and decided to check it out.
So, there is this organization, called "National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers" and they fight against the evil practice of circumcision.
Whatever. As far as I am concerned it's kinda silly, but they aren't hurting anyone, so I say, "Go for it, brother Beavis."
What I found utterly hilarious, is that they are a member of a larger organization called "International Coalition for Genital Integrity."
...
Think about it. There is a group called "International Coalition for Genital Integrity." And they got grown-up members, and a treasury and they probably have meetings, and an advisory board, and all that stuff. Just like any real organization.
This may not be funny to everyone, but I am sitting here laughing my ass off. =) Genital Integrity, FTW! LOL!

Russia warns Poland.
Posted on August 15, 2008 at 9:16 pm.
Anatoly Nogovitsin, the deputy head of the Russian armed forces, warned Poland today. He said, "The US is concerned with its own anti-missile defence, not Poland's. But Poland, by deploying [the shield], will be exposed to attack."
Thus must come as a huge surprise to the Polish people. Because Russia has never attacked Poland before and the two countries have been friends since forever.
Russia didn't try to invade Poland in the 1920s, didn't take a chunk of land from it, didn't backstab it and share it with Hitler. Didn't give Poland decades of cruel communist rule.
Hmm...
Yea, I guess Poland really needed that warning.

Pictures from Nevada/Arizona.
Posted on August 15, 2008 at 7:15 pm.
I've uploaded the pictures from my trip. Let me know what you think of them, and which ones you like the most! =)
Route 66
Hoover Dam
Grand Canyon
Treasure Island - our hotel
Social House
Wax Museum
The Venetian (not uploaded yet)
Miscellaneous (not uploaded yet)
I think I was able to do some pretty artistic photos in addition to merely recording the sights I've seen. Check out the rusty and rustic things in the Route 66 album. Also a picture of the candles in the Social House album.
For natural beauty go to the Grand Canyon album, for functional beauty to the Hoover Dam album and for resort glamor to the Treasure Island, The Venetian and the Miscellaneous albums.

Nevada/Arizona trip.

I am sitting in the Las Vegas airport right now, waiting for my flight back to Chicago.
This was my first time vacationing in Las Vegas, and even though I had fun, I consider it to be more important than just that. This is because I now know what I like and dislike about it and what I want to do the next time I visit.
The Strip:
Pretty, but not all it's cut out to be. Yes, loads of plaster and lights can look spectacular the first time, but if you look at it more than once, it really is not much more than plaster and light bulbs.
Hotels:
Venetian is very nice, we took a gondola ride and walked around. We also visited a wax museum, which was just like all other wax museums: 30% fun, 70% meh. Apparently it is the Venetian together with the Palazzo that are the most luxurious and expensie hotels on the strip, not the Belagio or Caesar's.
Luxor, New York New York, Excalibur, Circus Circus are less pretty than I thought they were. At the same time I am very impressed with the work of photographers who made them look a lot prettier than they are in real life.
Mirage is just meh. It's not bad or anything, but having no real theme it is just a little less interesting than other, themed, hotels. It still has a casino, bars, etc., etc. It also has a tram going straight to Treasure Island, which is convenient.
Flamingo is a nasty dump. Looks like one of those Soviet highrises from the 60s. I was genuinely surprised that thing is allowed to stand among all the other hotels, which at least attempt to look glamorous.
Treasure Island is pretty good. That's the one we stayed at. It has good bars and restaurants and the casino itself is nice. I was mostly playing Black Jack, losing a total of $160. Yara was playing slots and lost $20. The pool is ... just like any other hotel pool I've seen. It has water and they serve drinks. The outside nightly pirate show was neat! We saw it from Social House, a very nice Japanese restaurant. Our room was also very pleasant and overall I am happy with the quality of our stay.
Grand Canyon:
The most spectacular part of our visit. No man-made hotel, pool or casino can even remotely compare to the beauty of nature. We took a day-trip to the Southern Rim of the canyon and it was worth every minute and every penny. Along the way to rode on Route 66 and visited the Hoover Dam. Both are landmarks of American history and are as fascinating as we thought them to be. We also had the best luck with our tour guide who made the whole trip extremely interesting and exciting.
Shows:
Didn't see any. Grand Canyon sounded much more fun, and other evenings we wanted to ether dine out or relax. Plus, there wasn't anything there that truly interested us.
Las Vegas:
Apparently the strip is not really in Las Vegas. It is in an unincorporated city called Paradise. The true Las Vegas is much more interesting. This is where we will be going next time. Screw the strip - it is either for the clueless (which we were this time around) or the shallow.
Hookers:
Didn't have time for any of them this first visit. However, Yara and I did find out which brothels we will be visiting on our second visit. It's gonna be loads of fun!
Ok, my plane is soon. Later, all.

Pigs and more pigs.
Posted on August 10, 2008 at 10:00 pm.
Now, as Russian warships, tanks and jets pummel Georgian forces, and as Georgia begs its western allies for help (the US particularly.) I think it is appropriate to remember all the previous times Russia attacked its neighbors in rabid fits that characterize it so well.
1920 - Poland
1939 - Finland
1940 - Estonia
1940 - Lithuania
1940 - Latvia
1956 - Hungary
1968 - Czechoslovakia
These are just off the top of my head, I am sure I am missing plenty as well.
Whenever any of these countries asked for help, the reply from the West was along the lines of, "Sorry, but we can't help you now. We are having lunch."
I am assuming Georgia will suffer the same fate. Just today the fascist scumbag Putin said that Georgia had lost the right to rule Ossetia. Somehow that means that Russia had gained that right.
While this behavior is expected of Russia, a corrupt barbarian state, I am distraught by this latest betrayal by us - the West. In my opinion we should send men, ships, tanks and planes. We should make sure that not an inch of Georgian sovereign soil falls into Russia's dirty hands.
But that's not gonna happen.
Russians are pigs by their actions.
We are pigs by our inactions.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship." - Alexander Fraser Tytler (1747-1813)
