Movie - I am Legend.
Posted on December 9, 2008 at 11:22 pm.
Tonight I rented "I am Legend" with Will Smith. This was mostly to test out my Blue-Ray player.
Still, I found the movie disappointing. Not that I had high expectations, but the beginning and the middle were actually pretty impressive. The ending could have been spectacular, but came out as a fart as opposed to a canon blast.
Well, apparently there is another ending on this disk as well. I'll take a look tomorrow and see if it's any better.
As far as Blue-Ray though... WOW! Spectacular is probably the best word to describe the visual quality. I wonder if it looks even better on a screen that's 1.5 times bigger than mine.

New Blue-Ray player.

I just bought myself a nice new Sony BDP-350 to go with my new Sony TV.
So far I only tried 3 movies on it (all regular DVDs) Over the Hedge, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. All of them looked absolutely stunning! This up-converting stuff is really working great.
Now I need to rent a Blue-Ray movie and see the maximum performance the whole setup is capable of!

BlackBird.
Posted on December 8, 2008 at 5:00 pm.
This is sweet! BlackBird is a new browser built on top of Mozilla. It is made specifically for those of African descent, since regular FireFox does not seem to be able to meet their racial needs.
As a Russian, I can't wait for the release of DrunkenBird.
Thanks to Vika for alerting me to this.

Obama says: No need to buy guns.
Posted on December 8, 2008 at 11:53 am.
Ever since the votes of the faithful secured victory for The One, gun sales increased by as much as 40% across the nation. This is old news.
The new news, is that The One doesn't seem to grasp why that is. He now tells people that they shouldn't be buying guns. Apparently he's never been against guns and he always respected the 2nd amendment.
Unless you look at his voting record that is...

Atheists decided to put up a sign next to a Nativity display in Olympia, Washington.
Then it got stolen.
Raise your hand if you are surprised. Seriously.

Thor vs. Jesus.

I'm kinda surprised that most discussions about creationism revolve around Christianity. Sure, it's a prevalent religion around these parts, but it is by far not the only one. In fact, as far as religions go, it's fairly primitive, fairly self-contradictory and its adepts are fairly easy to argue against.
So why does it get so much attention?
It appears that for some reason the general public gives it (and other "major" religions) more validity. This is completely preposterous as far as I am concerned, but it seems to be the case. People are willing to actually hold discussions on whether Christianity is true or not. At the same time nobody is entertaining the idea of discussing, let's say, the Norse religion.
Moreover (and I will continue using it as an example) the Norse religion is being dismissed as the mere Norse mythology. It is assumed to be a collection of fairy tales and nobody gives any thought to whether it could actually be true. Christianity, on the other hand, is somehow not a mythology.
Why?
Why is it that a thunder god who rides an airborne chariot drawn by goats, and who throws a hammer that returns to him - is not worthy of consideration for existence? How is he any less valid than a self-resurrecting Jewish carpenter who is his own father and who promises salvation from a critical flaw caused by a rib-woman tricked by a talking snake into eating a magical apple?
All religions are based on completely non-verifiable claims. There is an equal amount of lack of proof for all of them. So how come some religions have an air of authority about them, while others are dismissed outright?

New TV.
Posted on November 25, 2008 at 10:57 pm.
I bought a new TV. It's a Sony Bravia 40v4100.
So far I like it. DVDs, cable and my laptop's output all look pretty nice. Of course there is a huge amount of various options that I am so far unfamiliar with, but I'm sure I'll find an optimal configuration eventually.
Apparently I also have loads of digital channels as well as my normal cable channels. Only a few are HD, but still it's nice. It's also kinda weird that I get over a hundred channels, since I am only paying for basic. Oh well, I won't be running to complain. =)
At one point (before the TV was delivered today) I was afraid that 40" may be too small, but now I am glad I didn't get anything larger. It looks just right from the couch. Any bigger would probably be an overkill.

If we don't talk about it...
Posted on November 19, 2008 at 3:29 pm.
Russian government (a.k.a. czar Putin) ordered the media to "watch it" as it reports on the economic crisis. The reason is so that there is no panic. Words such as "collapse" and "crisis" are banned, according to some sources.
It is ironic that Russia is in the worst economic situation in decades, because now it is the Dear Leader who is (at least nominally) in charge of the economy.
