Flock!
Posted on April 12, 2009 at 1:36 pm.
This weekend another game was added to Steam. It is called Flock!
It is essentially a puzzle game. You control a UFO that is tasked with herding sheep and other animals to a "motherflocker" in order to abduct them.
As the game progresses your UFO gains various abilities, such as tractor and compressor beams. You will be able to remove and place things like gates and bridges, increase the numbers of sheep by herding them into a "love" patch or just make them smaller by soaking them in water (they are made out of cotton by the way.) Obstacles include cliffs, pits, hedges, trees and so forth.
The price for the full game that encompasses 65 levels is $15, which is very affordable. There is also a demo, and that is what I decided to try first. Here are my impressions:
The idea is definitely interesting and novel to a degree. There's been something similar before, but not quite the same. The graphics are cartoon-like and cute. The music is fun, yet will likely get repetitive after a while. The sound effects are appropriate and don't really stand out in a positive or a negative way.
The biggest problem is the controls. It is not apparent where the sheep will run, so you will often end up having them fall of cliffs or into pits. Also they may just run right back to where they started, or better yet get stuck in trees without any chance of retrieving them.
My feeling is that this not for everyone. After playing the demo, I decided against buying the full game because I just don't see myself doing this for 65 levels.
On the other hand, the fans of the puzzle genre will likely find Flock! to be interesting, challenging and a good investment.

I did my taxes.

Finally filed my taxes today. The thieves from the government owe me over two thousand according to their thieving laws, and a whole lot more according to my idea of what representative government/taxation should look like.

The president of Brazil thinks that the global economic crisis is the fault of "white people with blue eyes."

Car and Plate Frame.

I actually took these pictures to post them on a gaming forum that I frequent, but I figured may as well post them here.
And that is not my actual license plate by the way. I found it on the Internet and pasted over my real plate for the purpose of anonymity. Oh wait, is that my name on top of this page? Damn...

We watched The President's Analyst a few days ago and loved it! This movie was released in 1967 but was years ahead of its time. An awesome comedy that everyone should watch!

Inferno - Ave Cleopatra.

A small triumph.
Nearly fifteen years ago I bought an Army of Lovers tape, a Swedish pop band that I listened to at the time. It included a song called Ave Cleopatra, which I liked.
Later I looked for it but couldn't find it. It turned out that Army of Lovers never sang it, instead it was performed by an obscure band called Inferno.
Recently, I remembered it and tried finding it online. It was not in any of the music stores nor on YouTube. After a year of on and off searching I found a guy in Belgium who had a CD single with four versions of the song. At that point I was so much into the hunt that money was not an issue.
Today it arrived. I win.
Here is one of the 4 versions: Ave Cleopatra (Extended Roman Version).
Check out the tacky cover too! =)

Game #126 - Dawn of War II.
Posted on March 11, 2009 at 11:39 pm.
A few minutes ago I beat Dawn of War II! It is my game number 126, and I recorded it in my list accordingly.
I heard a lot of good things about this game before I bought it, and all of them were true! This game is completely spectacular is nearly every aspect. The graphics, the sound, the gameplay, the voice acting, the writing. All these things are top-notch!
It has been a long time since a game made me stay up until 4:30 in the morning. This is exactly what happened yesterday. To say that I am pleased is not to say anything. The game is really, truly fun. I am delighted.
Hmm... I guess the use of the word "delighted" shouldn't go unqualified. I do have one serious problem with it. It requires you to create a Steam account and activate it online. Also it requires Games For Windows - LIVE to play multiplayer.
This is bullshit of the highest order. Essentially you can't play this game unless you have an Internet connection. Of all the disgusting DRM schemes this is probably one of the most contemptible.
However, if you are willing to look past this, the game itself is brilliant. Buy it.

Cyber attacks on Estonia by Russia.

Remember those cyber attacks on Estonia's infrastructure in 2007? Yea, just when had a dispute with Russia. I wrote about it here.
Well, a Russian government backed young group just claimed responsibility. According to them they didn't do anything wrong.

Warhammer Online.
Posted on March 7, 2009 at 12:37 pm.
There's a free 10-Day trial going on right now in Warhammer Online. I decided to give it a shot and created an account. Five-and-a-half gigabytes later I made a Witch Hunter and went on to exterminate some witches. By witches I of course mean the local flora and fauna.
So far so good. I am level 7... oh excuse me RANK 7 now, and progressing. Some things I like, public quests for example are really nice. The interface is a lot like WoW so fairly easy to pick up. Some features are also great, such as knowing where your quests are. Kind of like integrated Quest Helper.
The graphics are technically better than WoW, but don't actually seem that way because of WoW's awesome art direction. One thing that I found annoying, is that at max settings Warhammer runs flawlessly on my PC, while WoW's engine is so unoptimized it chokes even though there are much less polygons, and the textures are so low-resolution. Still, WoW looks prettier overall, even though its engine is crap.
The zone chat is something else. All they talk about is WoW. How it sucks, how it's too easy, how everyone who plays WoW is a stupid teenager or a basement virgin or Hitler or something. I've haven't seen so much bitterness and jealousy ever since... well, that's kinda private. It was entertaining for a while, but then it got pretty old.
Overall it's a nice way to pass some time, but I don't anticipate actually subscribing to it. Plus, they wouldn't let you level past rank 10 in the trial, so there's no way to see if I actually like the game past the first zone. Most MMOs are fairly similar in the beginning and only differ at later levels, so being unable to see those is a bit of a letdown.
