Two to the power of seven, baby!!! I win! Yea!!!

In addition to being an important milestone, Fallout 3 is also a spectacular game. I enjoyed playing it immensely, and I know I will go back to it because even though I won, there is also a whole unexplored world out there that I intend to visit!

G-Man prototype found!

Posted on May 9, 2009 at 12:20 pm.

You know the G-Man from the Half-Life series? I recently saw a movie, from which (I think) Valve has copied the "look and feel" of G-Man.

What do you think?

I won a giveaway!

Posted on May 8, 2009 at 9:00 pm.

I entered into AVault's giveaway and won a copy of Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor! This is pretty cool, and although I will not get a CD for my collection, I still own this game on Steam now. No time to play at the moment, but I'll get to it! Woot!

Windows 7 Ultimate RC.

Posted on May 6, 2009 at 11:23 am.

As some of you may know, Microsoft is offering a "free trial" of their next operating system - Windows 7. You can download a Release Candidate version form their web site and use it until June 2010. That's 13 months of free, legal, use.

Once released, Windows 7 will come in a number of different flavors, and to show off all of their features, the free trial is that of the Ultimate version, the most complete one of them all. You can download it in a number of different languages, and also in either 32 or 64-bit versions.

Last night I downloaded the 64-bit version and installed it on my main gaming computer. Here are my impressions:

Download - Fast and Easy.

What you actually will be downloading is a DVD ISO, which you will then need to burn to a DVD.

Burning - Fast and Easy.

This is not really a part of Windows 7 experience, but it was a step in the process, so I included it.

Installation - Moderately Fast and Very Easy.

Windows 7 asks far fewer questions during the installation that Windows XP or Windows 2000. It just does its job, like it's supposed to. Also, I was pleasantly surprised that it detected my RAID array without me having to provide any drivers on a floppy disk or a USB drive.

New Interface - Intuitive and Sexy.

I had no problem adjusting to the new interface. Everything is where I expected it to be, and there are a number of very welcome improvements over Windows XP and Windows Vista. I enjoyed a lot of small touches such as the jumping level bar on the volume control, which shows how loud the currently played sound it.

Compatibility - Too Early to Judge.

I was able to install and run a bunch of legacy applications, such as Miranda and Fallout 3. Everything worked without a problem, but it is to early to conclusively tell if all of the older programs will run smoothly. So far so good, however.

Speed - Too Early to Judge.

One thing I can tell you right now, it starts up faster than Windows XP. Over the course of the following months we'll see if it can keep this up and not get bogged down as more and more applications are installed.

Stability - Too Early to Judge.

Not a single hiccup yet. Time will tell if Windows 7 can consistently keep this up.

Overall - Impressive as Hell!

My first impressions of Windows 7 are that of an awesome system. Granted, I only spent about 2 hours with it so far, but it definitely has all the markings of a great OS. Fast, stable, sexy, compatible and free! I can't think of any reason not to upgrade. Although it is entirely possible that as the time goes by I will discover some flaws, right now I am very impressed by it. Great job Microsoft!

Movie - Wolverine.

Posted on May 4, 2009 at 8:05 pm.

We went to see Wolverine last night despite some bad reviews. In all fairness I don't see how this movie is different from the previous X-Men movies, or from any movie of this type in general.

Not much story, but fights, magic, etc. No different than Highlander or Star Wars, or whatever else.

I feel like I got my $8 worth of entertainment.

Left 4 Dead.

Posted on May 2, 2009 at 12:22 pm.

Steam had a free Left 4 Dead day, where everyone could download a full version and play for 24 hours or so.

After playing the first campaign, both with bots and with real people, and I must say I am somewhat disappointed. To me this is just another attempt to squeeze a few bucks out of HL2, without too much effort being involved. At least Portal and Team Fortress 2 are polished to a fine degree.

Or maybe it's me not caring too much for the whole "Zombie Apocalypse" deal. I don't mind it, but I'd much rather play in a "Docility of Western Civilization Apocalypse" setting. Well... I may yet get to play that in real life.

My political views aside, those of you who want this game, can buy it on sale at 40% off on Steam this weekend. That means the price is now $23.99 instead of usual $39.99.

Personally, however, I was really interested in this game, but now just I don't see myself spending money on it.

Book - The Vanishing Children.

Posted on April 30, 2009 at 9:29 am.

I recently read a book called "The Vanishing Children of Paris: Rumor and Politics before the French Revolution" by Arlette Farge and Jacques Revel.

It's a pretty interesting read for those who are interested in either French history or things like city revolts.

For example I would sincerely recommend this book to those who are running 7th Sea (or similar) campaigns. =)

Game #127 - Zeno Clash.

Posted on April 26, 2009 at 12:38 pm.

Just finished Zeno Clash a few minutes ago. It's now game #127 on my list.

Zeno Clash is a first person fist-fighting game set in a very strange and surreal setting. In some way it reminded me of American McGee's Alice. However, it is developed by a studio in Chile, so it carries a lot of local flavor with it, as well as just fantastic weirdness.

The game itself is fun, although it has some occasional annoyances when it comes to controls. The plot twist is fairly obvious, and there are a lot of loose ends, although to be fair the latter is a good idea considering the overall surrealism.

Zeno Clash is also a very short game. I think I was able to beat it in 4-6 hours only. Overall, however, the experience was pleasant. This is a type of game that is probably more about art than it is about actual gaming, which is not a bad thing.

Die, die, die!!!

Posted on April 21, 2009 at 10:22 pm.

Yara got a ticket. For not having a Cook County wheel tax sticker.

She has to go to court with proof of purchase of one. Our village of Glenview, however, does not require its residents to buy those. So I called the village. It turns out I live in an unincorporated Glenview, which is managed directly by the county. So I called the police and asked where to buy a sticker. They told me to go to the County Police. I went there and they told me to go to the Township. I never heard of them before, but I went there.

First of all a sticker is $40 which is fucking bullshit. Second of all they don't take credit cards. Thirdly they will charge me a $40 late fee, although nobody ever told me about this "unincorporated" bullshit. And fourthly the can't sell me the god damned sticker because I didn't update my registration. So they sent me to the local drivers license facility to update it.

There they said that they can't update it because they just don't do it. I have to go to a similar facility in Chicago.

So I'm going there tomorrow after work.

I want them all to die of infected puncture wounds to the stomach.

Movie - Max Payne.

Posted on April 13, 2009 at 1:16 am.

Just watched Max Payne.

To my extreme surprise, it is not a bad film. Nothing spectacular, aside from actual cinematography and the unusual fact that it didn't misrepresent (or ruin) the game on which it is based.

The thing is, the vast and overwhelming majority of movies based on games - suck. Unless they happen to be made by Uwe Boll, in which case they suck horribly.

I am pleased to say that Max Payne is one of the few game-based movies which are sort of OK, and even have a number of redeeming qualities.

If you liked the game - see it.
