Beretta Cx4 Storm.

Posted on July 3, 2009 at 11:32 am.

My friend Arthur gave me a most awesome birthday gift today! It is a Beretta Cx4 Storm semiautomatic carbine chambered for 9x19 Parabellum. I can't wait to go to the range with it!

Thank you, Arthur!!! Woot!

Here is a link to the official site with all the specs.

Update: I went shooting after work today. It's a pretty sweet gun. I had to spend some time setting up the sights, but in the end I'm happy to report that it is very reliable and holds very tight groups.

I did a few batches of 5 rounds at about 25 feet, and was consistently able to hit bull's eye with all 5 holes overlapping.

At approximately 50 feet I felt the potential for similarly tight groups, but wasn't able to achieve that today, because I couldn't see anything. I did, however, figure out what exactly I need to do next time:

1) Paint the front post red or orange, because I couldn't see it against the target due to both being black, as well as distance and poor lighting conditions.

2) Get different goggles, because mine were scratched and fogged up very fast, making everything blurry.(Already got them.)

3) Use a booth where the light works the way it's supposed to.

I'm confident I can get 1.5 sq. inch groups, if I make these improvements.

Overall: Woot!

Overlord II - Progress.

Posted on July 1, 2009 at 12:50 pm.

So I am playing Overlord II now (thank you Yara for the birthday gift!) and I have mixed feelings about it.

It is fun. I wrote about it in my post about the demo.

On another positive note, some issues that I had with the demo were also resolved, for instance, there are high resolution textures in the full game.

I still, however, don't like the camera, the controls and most of all the graphics. WTF were they thinking, porting shitty console graphics to PC?

Either way, despite these shortcomings it looks interesting, and I am going to play more!

Book - Poison Study.

I just finished reading Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder. It is a fantasy novel full of familiar archetypes and somewhat basic plot twists, but it's a very easy read and quite enjoyable. I plan to read the next two books in the series as well.

Trine and Battlefield Heroes.

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 10:06 am.

Two pieces of gaming news last week.

First of all, a demo of Trine came out. It's a platformer puzzle solving game that is reminiscent of The Lost Vikings. The latter was absolutely awesome, so I got instantly interested in the former.

Just as in The Lost Vikings, in Trine you control three different characters with unique abilities. A wizard who can levitate things and create a crate, a thief who can shoot arrows and use a grappling hook to swing, and a knight who can fight with a sword and block with a shield. Unlike the lost vikings, however, there is only one character in screen at a time.

The game is beautiful, and the puzzles presented in the demo often have multiple solutions. There are, however, jumping sequences, which is a bit of a letdown, but, considering the genre, a bit easier to forgive. Overall I am impressed and will possibly buy Trine when it comes out.

The second piece of news is that Battlefield Heroes was finally released.

For those of you who don't know, it's a free-to-play multiplayer FPS akin to Team Fortress or Unreal Tournament. All you gotta do is go to their website, register and play.

This game is about a conflict between a Royal Army and a National Army, which are very thinly disguised British and Germans of WWII. They are fighting over the results of the bicycling event of their most recent Olympics.

The game is designed in a very cute and funny cartoon style and is full of happy, bright colors. It is a pleasure to behold.

Each side has 3 classes from which you can choose. A soldier, who has a sub machine gun and a shotgun, plus some miscellaneous things like explosives, etc. A gunner, who has a proper machine gun and can take more damage. And lastly a commando, who can turn invisible, use a knife and also a sniper rifle.

In the game there are vehicles: tanks, jeeps and airplanes. Each can fit more than one player, for example two people can sit on the wings of the plane.

The combat itself is great fun. It could be seen as a bit simplistic, but there are great possibilities for all sorts of cool tactics and combinations.

You earn points by shooting the enemy, capturing flags and completing missions. A match is won by capturing flags and holding on to them, but your personal missions are the ones you select beforehand. For example you could take on a mission to inflict 1000 points of damage to enemies. These points could be spent on upgrades in the store. Keep in mind, however, that upgrades are not permanent. They will disappear after a day or a month of real time.

As you level up, you will also gain character points which you can buy permanent abilities with.

Lastly, there are hero points which you can (but are not required to) buy with real money. These can be used to obtain a load of different cosmetic customizations, such as clothing.

Overall, Battlefield Heroes is a very fun game, and since it is free, there is no reason why everyone shouldn't be playing it.

Book - Useless Victory.

Posted on June 19, 2009 at 3:59 pm.

For the past few days I was reading Chekhov. I can't say that I love his short stories, but there's something to be said for them.

The last thing I read was a very short novel called Useless Victory, written in 1882. It was meant to parody the cliche melodramatic literature of the time. Surprisingly enough I found it to be the best of Chekhov's works that I've read so far.

I hate IKEA.

I hate IKEA.

I went there today to buy some stuff. Left work at 4:00 got home at 7:00. In the meantime I spent two hours in traffic and one hour in that damned store. To add to that, I got heavily rained on, and went hungry for much longer than normal. I also didn't buy anything...

Normally I don't suffer from any excessive indecisiveness. In fact, sometimes quite the opposite is true. IKEA, however seems to always put me into some sort of trance. As soon as I walk in the door I become tired and weak-willed. That place is cursed!

Wait, what?

Posted on June 15, 2009 at 11:04 pm.

1) In my office there is a huge bag filled with different colored condoms that have company logo and address printed on the wrappers. I think I will start handing them out as business cards. Too bad they all expired back in 2006.

2) I just saw a Scientology commercial on History channel. On a show about the origins of the universe, no less. WHAT THE FUCK!!!?

We are going DOWN.

Posted on June 14, 2009 at 11:50 pm.

So that moron Joe Biden tells "Meet the Press" that "everyone guessed wrong" on the impact of the stimulus, economy was worse off than anyone thought.

Umm... NO, ASSHOLE, IT WAS YOU WHO GUESSED WRONG! Normal people were saying that your "stimulus" is bullshit all along!

Oh and by the way we are reverting back to stone age already. Michigan is going back from paved roads to gravel ones. Soon we'll use bronze swords and the three field system.

Overlord II - Demo.

Posted on June 11, 2009 at 9:20 pm.

Just tried it.

Graphics don't seem that impressive somehow. I also noticed a few glitches with certain items blinking and therefore being hard to notice.

Controls are also lacking. It is difficult to get minions to pick up armor.

On the positive note, you get to do evil things like clubbing baby seals and chasing the locals.

Most refreshingly you get to kill PETA pukes disguised as elves. Yep, the sort of elves with dreadlocks who say things like "Let's leave all this bad karma behind, maaan" and "All nature's creatures are our friends, especially the cute furry ones" in voices suggestive of excessive marijuana consumption.

Killing game enemies has never been so incredibly satisfying, and believe me, I've killed a lot of Nazis, Aliens, Orcs, Russians, Gangsters, Zombies, Arabs and other such villains.
