Terry Pratchett, England, and assisted suicide.

Posted on September 14, 2009 at 10:51 am.

I've been ridiculing England for a while now, especially in connection with their health-care policies. Today, however, I find proof that it is not all bad.

I was shown an article about Terry Pratchett, whose settings and characters I always found delightful, speaking out in favor of assisted suicide. Moreover, I learned that the House Of Lords ruled that those who assist their relatives in traveling to Switzerland for the purpose of assisted suicide will not face prosecution under certain conditions. The article assumes that these conditions include terminal illness.

I am very much for personal freedoms, including the freedom to die as (and when) one sees fit. This ruling may be a first step to the legalization of suicide.

I never thought I'd say this, but it appears that America has something to learn from England. Go Brits!

P.S. - I really recommend reading the entire article. It has a lot of very interesting information in it.

Target practice.

Posted on September 12, 2009 at 7:40 pm.

I went shooting this morning with my friends. We took my Beretta Cx4 Storm. Once at the range we also rented a Glock-22 (.40) and some Ruger (.22) which I don't remember the exact model for.

We fired 200 rounds across all three weapons and it was a lot of fun. I haven't played with pistols in a while, and was glad to discover that my skills have not diminished too much. At 25 feet rapid fire (Glock-22) I was still able to put 10/10 into the black, including 3 to 4 bull's eye shots.

The picture above is one of my Cx4 targets at 50 feet.

A skull that rewrites the history of man.

Posted on September 9, 2009 at 10:22 am.

"The conventional view of human evolution and how early man colonised the world has been thrown into doubt by a series of stunning palaeontological discoveries suggesting that Africa was not the sole cradle of humankind. Scientists have found a handful of ancient human skulls at an archaeological site two hours from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, that suggest a Eurasian chapter in the long evolutionary story of man.

The skulls, jawbones and fragments of limb bones suggest that our ancient human ancestors migrated out of Africa far earlier than previously thought and spent a long evolutionary interlude in Eurasia - before moving back into Africa to complete the story of man.

Experts believe fossilised bones unearthed at the medieval village of Dmanisi in the foothills of the Caucuses, and dated to about 1.8 million years ago, are the oldest indisputable remains of humans discovered outside of Africa."

Game #133 - Pizza Morgana - Episode 1

Posted on September 8, 2009 at 10:32 pm.

I just beat Pizza Morgana ~ Episode 1: Monsters and Manipulations in the Magical Forest, which happens to be my game number 133.

Avault (the gaming site for which I write) got me a copy to review. Now that I've actually finished it, I can begin writing.

Oh and of course I recorded it in my list, but that pretty much goes without saying.

Taxpayers fund feminist porn.

Posted on September 8, 2009 at 9:02 pm.

I guess any socialist government is either evil or stupid or both. For example, our dear friends from Sweden have seen it frugal to invest taxpayers' money in creating "feminist porn."

I have nothing against porn. I love porn. I think there should be as much porn as possible out there, be it feminist or otherwise. I just find it somewhat strange that a government decided that making porn is such an important public service, that it should be funded by the state.

Oh and the way it actually turned out is ... well, not necessarily all that feminist. We've got loads of lesbian porn already, and all of it was (until now) paid for by private companies and individuals.

ASP.NET

Posted on September 8, 2009 at 1:40 pm.

It's funny how years after ASP.NET was released I (and many others) still continue to write in regular old ASP. Unfortunately it seems that .NET is just not working out all that great for non-trivial tasks.

I have no claims to being a great programmer. I received no formal education in the field, and know a lot less than my friends who graduated with Computer Science degrees. I do have enough skill and knowledge to write sites such as this one and to be employed full time as a web developer/designer.

The issue with .NET is that it is awesome for standard solutions. I've done some sites in it and everything was fine. If something common needs to be done, .NET is a way to go, since it will make your job short and simple.

On the other hand, if you have something even a little non-standard in mind, you can pretty much forget it. Unless, that is, you are a high-level coder. Even then, you'll probably spend a lot of time making those custom controls, or just getting things done.

Oh well...

Torchlight.

Posted on September 4, 2009 at 2:20 pm.

I feel like I am stealing a lot of content from RPS lately. I guess it's their own fault for being so awesome.

Anyway, they alerted me to this new game that's about to come out called Torchlight. It is a dungeon-hack, also known as "Diablo clone." I'm not a big fan of this sort of games and I hated Diablo II, but I think I wanna try this one. I like the colors and the cartoony graphics. Gonna drop a line to my editor and see if anyone else got dibs on a review copy. =)

Either way, it is due to be released on October 27th and the price will be $20 for a download. Meanwhile check out their web site for screenshots and videos. If you liked Diablo and if you liked the art style of WoW, you ought to check it out. Hopefully by then I'll have a review out.

Sweet awesomeness!!!

Posted on September 3, 2009 at 3:58 pm.

This is so cool, I just had to write about it here, even though I already posted it on Facebook!

A girl wanted to propose to her gamer boyfriend. Instead of nagging for him to "stop playing" and "get off the computer" she decided to make a mod (custom level) to a game that he is playing - Fallout 3 (an awesome game by the way).

She had help from the Fallout community, and in the end was able to produce a very good mod, which the guy played. At the end of it, as he rescued her from slavers, she (or rather her in-game likeness) dropped on one knee and proposed.

He said yes! =)

Check out a video of the whole thing. If you are not into games, just watch the last minute or so.

Oh, yea, I found it over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun - my favorite PC gaming site.

Sudoku Ball Detective review published.

Posted on September 3, 2009 at 10:22 am.

My review of Sudoku Ball Detective was published today. I am not sure how I ended up with this game. According to my editor, I pulled the short straw. Either way, I tried to do the best I could with it.

You can find it over at the Adrenaline Vault.

Warcraft 2.

Posted on September 2, 2009 at 12:08 am.

Guess what I'm playing?

Warcraft 2 is such a wonderful classic! I almost forgot how much I love it. Sadly I don't own the original Warcraft. Anyone know if it was ever released on a CD? I'd love to buy it!

Update: I found that it was in fact released on CD. I think I am going to try and hunt a copy down now.
